Chapter 16

Scarlett

I hurried to my office wanting to finish packing up and getting things ready for April. A man from maintenance arrived to help move my things over to George’s old office and brought April’s with him. I instructed him to just place my things on the sofa, I would take care of them later, and thanked him for all his help.

I was so nervous I could barely stand still. April had been my stairwell partner for months, and I was happy to have her as an assistant. I’d brought a plant from home and placed it on her desk with a card and generous certificate to the salon downstairs.

Right on time she tapped on the door and pushed it open. I smiled at her and stood. “Why are you knocking on your own door?”

She giggled. “I’m still pinching myself. This is huge for me. And to think we get to work together.”

“Nahhhh. You had to know I’d pick you after all those flights of stairs.”

She laughed. “I hoped.”

“Well. I brought you a plant to liven up the space. I’ll leave you to settle in. I have a bit of my own settling to do and we only have an hour until the luncheon.”

I started to leave and she called after me. “Scarlett?”

“Yes?”

“Thank you.”

“No, April. Thank you. Thank you for applying. When I saw your name on the list, it was like a breath of fresh air for me. Remember, I’m new at this as well and happy to have a friend.” I smiled at her and closed the door behind me so that she could get her office in order.

Georgia caught me on the mezzanine and handed me Walter’s offer. I asked her to send him up to my office so I could present it to him. Her smile was warm and wide, but the look in her eye was mischievous.

“I’ll go get him, and I may need a bottle of water from the coffee room, would you like one?” She winked at me, and I grinned.

“Yes, please. Thank you, Georgia. When you’re done, can you check in with April and make sure she has your chat and is set up? That is, if Graham doesn’t need you?”

“I’d love to. I’ll send Walter up directly.”

Within minutes, Walter knocked on the outside of the open door. He still wore a look of uncertainty and looked around the large office.

“Come in, Walter. Please, have a seat. You’ll have to excuse the mess. I haven’t unpacked my office yet.”

He sat in the chair across from the large wooden desk. I wasted no time and did as Graham had done to me, simply sliding the offer over for him to look at.

He opened the folder, and his eyebrows shot up in stunned amazement. He looked at me and I sat down to explain the position to him.

“If everything looks alright to you, the position will start on Monday. There is a non-disclosure in there you must sign as you will have access to proprietary information.
